Voyah
The premium brand of the state-owned Dongfeng group. Large SUVs and MPVs, with a range extender (EREV) or plug-in hybrid.
Geely
The group that owns Volvo, Polestar, Lotus and Zeekr. The widest lineup, from city cars to SUVs.
Zeekr
Geely's premium electric brand, on the same platform family as the Volvo EX30 and Polestar 4.
Denza
BYD's luxury brand, originally started together with Mercedes-Benz.
Avatr
A joint project of Changan, Huawei and CATL. Designed by Nader Faghihzadeh, former chief designer at BMW.
Li Auto (LiXiang)
The specialist in large family SUVs with a range extender (EREV). Since 2025 it also sells pure electrics.
Xiaomi

Leapmotor

In six years, the ratio has flipped. Foreign brands, which dominated the Chinese market for three decades, now sell less than a third of the cars.

Glossary
The terms from listings, each explained in one sentence.
- PHEV
- Plug-in hybrid. A battery that charges from a plug, plus a gasoline engine that can also drive the wheels.
- EREV
- Electric with a range extender. Only the electric motor drives the wheels; gasoline only produces electricity.
- BEV
- A pure electric car. Only a battery and an electric motor, charges only from a plug.
- HEV
- A classic hybrid, no plug. The small battery charges while you drive.
- DM-i
- The name of BYD's plug-in hybrid system. It runs mostly on electricity; the gasoline engine works mainly as a generator.
- LFP
- Lithium iron phosphate battery. Cheaper, harder to ignite and with more charge cycles, but loses more in winter.
- NMC
- Nickel manganese cobalt battery. More energy for the same weight, but more expensive.
- CLTC
- The Chinese range test cycle. It is the most optimistic; in reality, count on less.
- WLTP
- The European test cycle. More realistic than CLTC, but still optimistic in winter and on the highway.
- OTA
- Software updates over the internet, with no trip to the service center. They can bring new features or fixes.
- 800V
- A high-voltage electrical architecture. It allows much faster charging, but only at stations that deliver high power.
