What to know before buying a Denza
- The brand depends heavily on a single model. The D9 MPV brought 93% of sales in 2023 and about 89% in the first eight months of 2024. The N9 and N8L SUVs are only a year old, and the N7 and Z9 left the lineup after less than three years.
- No own network in Moldova. In Europe, Denza has only been selling since April 2026, in five countries. Service and parts come through our partner network and through BYD, not through a Denza dealer.
- Flash charging needs special stations. The five minutes for 10–70% are only possible at high-power BYD stations, and in Europe the fastest ones use a Chinese connector. At a regular fast charger, the car charges at the station's speed.
- The software is designed for China. Cars brought from China have infotainment and driver assistance calibrated for the Chinese market. The resale value of a Chinese premium car is still hard to estimate here, and models are updated often, sometimes every six months.
Denza · annual sales
Denza cars sold per year
The 2023 jump came almost entirely from the D9, launched in August 2022. In 2025, growth came from the new N9 and N8L SUVs. In the first four months of 2026 sales fell 38%, then recovered in July, up 69%.

A short history
Denza was born on May 27, 2010, when BYD and Daimler, the group that owned Mercedes-Benz, signed a 50/50 joint venture. The joint company received its license in 2011, and the Denza name appeared in 2012. The idea was simple: BYD brought the batteries and electric motors, Daimler the premium car experience. It was the first Sino-foreign joint venture dedicated to electric cars.
The first model, the Denza EV, arrived in December 2014. Sales stayed small for years, under 5,000 cars a year until 2021. The Denza X SUV, launched in 2020, did not catch on.
In December 2021, Daimler announced it would cut its stake from 50% to 10%, and the deal closed in 2022: BYD took control with 90%. The company was renamed, and the brand was relaunched in August 2022 with the D9 MPV. The D9 changed everything: in 2023 Denza sold 127,840 cars, almost 13 times more than in 2022, and the D9 was China's best-selling MPV in 2023 and 2024.
In September 2024, Mercedes-Benz sold its last 10%, and Denza became a 100% BYD subsidiary. The Z9 GT and the Z9 sedan, the first models on the e³ platform, arrived at the same time. The large N9 (March) and N8L (October) SUVs followed in 2025. Sales rose to 157,134 cars, up almost 25%, but far below the target of more than 300,000 announced at the start of the year.
The brand was presented for Europe in Milan in April 2025, but the launch was postponed until April 8, 2026, in Paris. The second-generation D9 arrived in April 2026: the first unit was BYD's 16-millionth electrified vehicle. In 2026, Denza dropped the N7 SUV and the Z9 sedan, unveiled the Z sports car, and is launching the Z9S electric sedan on September 23.
What sets it apart
e³ (易三方): three electric motors
On the Z9 GT, N9 and Z9S, each rear wheel has its own motor, plus one motor at the front. The car controls the force at each wheel separately, so it can turn tightly on the spot, move diagonally (“crab walk”) when parking, and stay stable on ice or in a tire blowout at high speed. The rear wheels also steer, independently.
Flash charging with the second-generation Blade battery
The 2026 models (Z9 GT, second-generation D9, N8L, N9) use BYD's new Blade LFP battery. At dedicated BYD stations, the Z9 GT and D9 charge from 10% to 70% in about five minutes. At a regular fast charger, the power is limited by the station: up to 270 kW for the Z9 GT.
Plug-in hybrids with long electric range
Denza's PHEV versions run mostly on electricity. The second-generation D9 PHEV has up to 401 km of electric range on the Chinese CLTC cycle, and the N8L has 430 km. In practice, especially in winter, expect lower figures.
God's Eye, BYD's driver assistance
Denza uses the top versions of the God's Eye (天神之眼) system, with LiDAR sensors: one on the N9, three on the second-generation D9. The assisted-driving functions are calibrated for Chinese roads and maps.
Denza uses a letter for the family and a number for the size. D stands for MPV (D9), N for SUV (N7, N8, N8L, N9), and Z is the sporty family: the Z9 sedan, the Z9 GT, the smaller Z9S sedan and the Z sports car. The L in N8L marks the long version, with three rows of seats. For export, Denza also sells the B5 and B8, which are Fangchengbao SUVs with the Denza badge.
The full Denza lineup and positioning
Denza is BYD's premium brand: above BYD in price, below Yangwang. In Europe it targets BMW and Mercedes-Benz customers, and in China it competes in the large family MPV and SUV segments.
The Price level column shows, on a scale of 1 to 4, how expensive the model is: from budget to premium. The European rival column is a reference for size and class; it doesn't mean the cars are the same. The yellow tag marks models in our catalog.
