Brand facts

A short history

The company was founded in July 2018 in Chongqing as “Changan NIO,” a joint venture between state-owned carmaker Changan and start-up NIO, with 45% each. In 2019, designer Nader Faghihzadeh, who came after 17 years at BMW, opened the brand's design center in Munich.

The partnership with NIO did not work out. In June 2020 Changan took over almost all the shares, leaving NIO with under 5%. In May 2021 the company was named Avatr (阿维塔), and in 2021–2022 CATL, the world's largest battery maker, became a shareholder. Huawei joined as a technology partner, without shares. That is how the “CHN” formula was born: Changan makes the car, Huawei the electronic brain, CATL the battery.

The first model, the Avatr 11 SUV, was launched in August 2022, with first deliveries in December 2022. It was followed by the Avatr 12 sedan (November 2023), the Avatr 07 SUV (September 2024) and the Avatr 06 sedan (April 2025). From September 2024, the models got EREV versions one by one: the Avatr 07 from launch, the Avatr 11 in December 2024 and the Avatr 12 in May 2025. In 2025, Avatr delivered about 122,700 cars, nearly double 2024.

In August 2024, Avatr bought 10% of Yinwang, Huawei's automotive unit, for 11.5 billion yuan, paid in full by October 2025. Huawei kept 80%, and Seres (AITO) another 10%. In July 2025, Changan's parent group became a separate central state-owned company, China Changan Automobile Group.

2026 is a hard year. In the first half, deliveries fell about 53%, to 27,619 cars. The first Hong Kong listing application lapsed in May 2026 and was refiled on June 30. In April, Changan announced that Avatr and Deepal would merge their back-office operations to cut costs by 20–30%. Avatr responded with new models: the 06T station wagon (April) and the 07L SUV (August).

What sets it apart

Three partners in one car

Avatr does not make its core technology itself. Changan provides the platform and the plants, Huawei the driver assistance, infotainment and some of the electric motors, and CATL the batteries. The platform is called CHN, after the initials of the three partners. The upside: cutting-edge technology without years of in-house development. The downside: the brand depends on its partners for the most important systems.

Huawei ADS and HarmonyOS

All Avatr models use the Huawei Qiankun ADS driver-assistance system, with LiDAR, and Huawei HarmonyOS (HarmonySpace) infotainment. Since August 2024, the collaboration has moved to the “HI Plus” model: Huawei also helps define new products, not just supply systems. The newest model, the 07L, already has ADS 5. The assisted-driving functions are designed for Chinese roads and maps.

Kunlun EREV, the range extender

The EREV versions (in Chinese 增程, “extended range”) have a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine that does not drive the wheels. It only generates electricity for the battery. The wheels are always driven by the electric motors. The claimed total range on the Chinese CLTC cycle is over 1,000 km, for example up to 1,065 km for the Avatr 11 EREV.

Designed in Munich

Avatr cars are styled at the design center in Munich, led by Nader Faghihzadeh, a former BMW designer who worked on the 7 Series and the 6 Series Gran Coupé, among others. That is where the coupé lines of the SUVs and the fastback proportions of the sedans come from.

The name Avatr comes from “Avatar,” and in Chinese it is written 阿维塔 (pronounced roughly “A-way-ta”). The models carry numbers: 06 and 07 are the smaller, more affordable models, 11 and 12 the largest. An even number (06, 12) means a sedan, an odd one (07, 11) an SUV. The letter T marks the station wagon version (06T), and L the longer version (07L).

Avatr is the premium top of the Changan group: in China it starts at about 200,000 yuan and competes with AITO (also using Huawei technology), Xiaomi, Zeekr, Tesla and the electric versions of BMW, Audi and Mercedes.
