Polestar: the Swedish electric brand of Volvo and Geely, with cars built mostly in China

THE AUTO OUTLET TEAM · UPDATED SEPTEMBER 23, 2026 · ~7 MIN

In short

Polestar is a Swedish electric car brand that grew out of Volvo's racing team and became a standalone brand in 2017. It is mostly owned by Li Shufu, the founder of Geely, and by Geely Holding; Volvo Cars still holds about one fifth. Polestar has no plants of its own: its cars are built in Geely and Volvo factories, most of them in China. It loses money every year and survives on funding from its shareholders, and since 2025 it has practically withdrawn from the Chinese market. In Moldova, we bring the Polestar 4 to order, built by Geely in China on the SEA platform.

What to know before buying a Polestar

  • Fragile finances. Polestar has lost money every year: 2.36 billion dollars in 2025. It survives on money from Geely, Li Shufu and Volvo, and its stock had to be consolidated in December 2025 to avoid being delisted from Nasdaq. The brand's future depends on the support of these shareholders.
  • Polestar has left China. Since October 2025 it has no stores at all in China. A car built for the Chinese market has a different infotainment system (based on Flyme Auto, without Google services) than a European one, and Polestar's European warranty and updates may not apply. Ask us exactly which version the car you choose is.
  • The Polestar 4 coupe has no rear window. You see behind you only through the camera and the digital mirror. Many people get used to it quickly, but it is worth test-driving the car first, especially at night or in the rain. Those who want a rear window now have the Polestar 4 SUV version.
  • Check for recalls. In April 2026, Geely recalled 1,473 Polestar 4 cars in China, built between November 2023 and May 2024, over a risk of battery overheating. For a car from that period, ask for proof that the repair was done.

Polestar grew quickly until 2023, fell in 2024 and had its best year in 2025, thanks to the Polestar 4. Note: through 2023 the figures are deliveries, while from 2024 Polestar reports retail sales to end customers, so the years are not perfectly comparable.

A short history

Polestar comes from the world of racing. In 1996 the Swedish team Flash Engineering was formed, competing in the Swedish Touring Car Championship. In 2005 it became Polestar Racing, and from 2009 it was Volvo's official partner for the sport versions of its production models. In July 2015, Volvo Cars bought the Polestar brand.

In October 2017, Volvo Cars and Geely Holding announced that Polestar would become a separate brand dedicated to electric cars, with an investment of 5 billion yuan. The first model, the Polestar 1, was a plug-in hybrid coupe built in only about 1,500 units between 2019 and 2021, at a plant in Chengdu (China). The first volume model, the Polestar 2, entered production in 2020 at the Taizhou plant (Luqiao district, China), which Volvo bought from Geely in December 2021.

On June 24, 2022, Polestar listed on the Nasdaq exchange in New York through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). The stock started at about 13 dollars and fell almost continuously; in September 2025 it dropped below 1 dollar, and Nasdaq warned the company that it risked being delisted. Polestar responded with a consolidation of its listed shares (30 to 1) on December 9, 2025, and on December 23, 2025, Nasdaq confirmed that the stock again met the 1-dollar threshold. Meanwhile, in 2024 Volvo Cars distributed a large part of its Polestar shares to its own shareholders, and Geely and Li Shufu became the majority owners.

In China, Polestar never caught on. In 2023 it formed a joint venture with Xingji Meizu (Li Shufu's phone group), which was closed in April 2025. In the first half of 2025 it sold only 69 cars in China, and on October 13, 2025, it closed its last store, in Shanghai; since then it sells only online. In June 2026, US authorities banned the sale of new Polestar cars from model year 2027, due to rules on Chinese software and components, so the brand is focusing on Europe.

Even so, sales have grown: 60,119 cars in 2025 (+34%), its best year, and 30,423 in the first half of 2026. The best-selling model is the Polestar 4. Losses remain large, however: 2.36 billion dollars in 2025. In 2025–2026, Geely, Li Shufu and Volvo put in over one billion dollars of new capital and converted loans of about 640 million into shares. The plan for the coming years: the Polestar 4 SUV (with a rear window) in 2026, the new Polestar 2 in 2027 and the Polestar 7 compact SUV, the first Polestar built in Europe (Slovakia), in 2028.

What sets it apart

No plants of its own: built by Geely and Volvo, mostly in China

Polestar has an "asset-light" model: it designs its cars in Sweden and the UK but builds them in its partners' plants. The Polestar 2 comes off Volvo's line in Taizhou (China), the Polestar 4 from Geely in Hangzhou Bay, near Ningbo (China), and since 2025 also from the Renault Korea plant in Busan (South Korea), initially for North America. The Polestar 3 was built in Chengdu (China) and in South Carolina (US); from 2026 all production is moving to the US. The only model planned in Europe is the Polestar 7, in Košice (Slovakia), from 2028.

Polestar 4: the SEA platform, related to the Zeekr 001 and Volvo EX30

The Polestar 4 sits on Geely's SEA platform, the same base as the Zeekr 001 and Volvo EX30. It has a 102 kWh NMC battery at 400 V, fast charging of up to 200 kW and 22 kW AC charging. The single-motor version (272 hp, rear-wheel drive) has up to 600 km of WLTP range; the dual-motor version (544 hp) accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. It received five stars in Euro NCAP tests in 2025.

No rear window: a camera instead of rear glass

The Polestar 4 in its coupe version has no rear window. Instead, a roof-mounted camera feeds the image to a digital rearview mirror. This gives rear passengers more headroom, and the glass roof can extend all the way back. For those who don't want this, in September 2026 Polestar launched the Polestar 4 SUV version, with a rear window, built in South Korea.

A car for China or for Europe

In Europe and North America, the Polestar 4 has the Android Automotive infotainment system, with Google services (Maps, Assistant, Play). For China, Polestar chose a different system, built on the Flyme Auto software from Meizu, a company in Li Shufu's group, without Google services. And since 2025 Polestar has practically stopped selling in China. That is why it matters where the car comes from: a car built for the Chinese market has different software and apps and may have a different warranty and different updates than one sold by Polestar in Europe. Always ask us which version the car you choose is.

Polestar numbers its models in order of appearance, not by size. The Polestar 1 was the plug-in hybrid coupe, the 2 is the mid-size liftback, the 3 the large SUV, the 4 the coupe-SUV, the 5 the large GT sedan, the 6 a planned roadster, and the 7 the upcoming compact SUV. So the Polestar 7 will be smaller than the Polestar 3. "Polestar" means the North Star, and in Chinese the brand is written 极星 (Jíxīng).

The full Polestar lineup and positioning

FAQ

Is Polestar a reliable brand?
Polestar is a young brand, with Swedish engineering and strong shareholders: Geely, its founder Li Shufu, and Volvo Cars. The Polestar 4 received five stars in Euro NCAP safety tests in 2025. The weak point is the financial side: the company loses money every year and depends on its shareholders' money. The cars are built in Geely and Volvo plants, most of them in China.
Where can a Polestar be serviced in Moldova?
We did not find an official Polestar representative office or service center in Moldova, nor any Polestar announcement about entering our market. Auto Outlet works with partner service centers in Chișinău that specialize in electric and hybrid cars, and provides support with spare parts. An electric car needs less maintenance than a gasoline one: it has no engine oil, fuel filters or timing belt, and the brakes wear more slowly thanks to regenerative braking.
What is the SEA platform the Polestar 4 is built on?
SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) is the Geely group's platform designed from scratch for electric cars. The Polestar 4, Zeekr 001, Zeekr 7X, Volvo EX30 and smart #1 are built on it. For the buyer, this means components produced in large volumes and also used on cars sold in Europe. On the Polestar 4, SEA is the large version, with a wheelbase of almost 3 meters and a 102 kWh battery.
How much does a Polestar cost in Moldova?
from about €27,100
