What to know before you buy a BYD
- A short track record in Europe. BYD has only been selling in volume in Europe since 2023. There are no ten-year reliability statistics yet, as there are for Japanese or German brands.
- Chinese range figures are optimistic. The figures in Chinese spec sheets use the CLTC cycle. In real conditions, count on about two-thirds of the CLTC figure on average, and about half in winter on the highway (see CLTC vs WLTP).
- The software is built for China. Cars brought from China come with the Chinese infotainment system. Check with us which language and apps the model you choose has.
- Resale value is still hard to estimate in the Moldovan market, because the second-hand market for BYD is just getting started.

Electric and plug-in hybrid cars sold by BYD, in millions
In five years, sales grew almost 25-fold. The 2022 jump coincides with the move away from gasoline-only cars. In 2025 growth slowed to +7.7%, but more than a million cars have already been sold outside China.

The history, in brief
BYD started in 1995 with 20 employees and a single product: rechargeable batteries for mobile phones. Within a few years it had become one of the world's largest battery suppliers, working for brands like Motorola and Nokia.
In 2003 it bought a small state-owned car factory, Qinchuan Automobile, and entered the auto industry. The first models were cheap gasoline cars. The underlying idea was different: if you know how to make batteries, you have a huge advantage when cars switch to electric.
In 2008, Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett's company, bought about 10% of BYD. It was the first signal to Western investors that BYD was a name to watch. Berkshire started selling its shares in 2022 and had fully exited by March 2025, with a gain of more than 20 times its investment.
In March 2022, BYD completely stopped making cars that run only on gasoline. Since then it has made only electric and plug-in hybrid cars. In 2024 it sold 4.27 million of them, and in 2025 4.6 million, more than any other manufacturer in the world.
World · 2025
Electric and plug-in hybrid cars sold in 2025, by automaker group, in millions
BYD sold almost as much as the next three groups combined. Six of the top 10 groups are Chinese. The largest European group, Volkswagen, is in fifth place. Toyota, the world's largest carmaker, sells few electric and plug-in hybrid cars because it is betting on conventional hybrids.
* GM: US sales only; GM's electric cars in China are counted under SAIC. Toyota: minimum; the global plug-in hybrid figure is not published. Stellantis, Honda and Nissan don't publish comparable figures. Totals for Chinese groups include EREVs and, in some cases, commercial vehicles.

What makes it different
It makes almost everything itself
Most European manufacturers buy batteries, electronics and chips from suppliers. BYD makes them in-house, including power semiconductors and, since 2024, even the ships that carry its cars. That means lower costs and control over every part, but also dependence on a single group.
Blade Battery
Since 2020, BYD's battery has been an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, with long, thin cells, like blades, placed directly into the pack. LFP handles more charge cycles than NMC batteries and is much harder to ignite. BYD demonstrated this with the nail penetration test: the punctured battery did not catch fire. The downside is slightly lower energy density and a more noticeable drop in range in winter.
DM-i, the hybrid that drives mostly on electricity
Almost all BYD models sold in Moldova are DM-i, meaning plug-in hybrids. The difference from a conventional hybrid: the wheels are driven by the electric motor almost all the time. The 1.5-liter gasoline engine works mostly as a generator and connects directly to the wheels only at a steady speed on the highway. The full explanation is in DM-i, explained and PHEV, EREV or BEV.
How to read the model names
BYD splits its lineup into two “series” with different names. It doesn't matter technically, but it helps you find your way around listings.
Names of Chinese dynasties
Han, Tang, Song, Qin, Yuan. More classic design, with traditional touches.
Names of sea creatures
Seal, Sealion, Dolphin, Seagull. Sportier, more modern design.
On every model, the suffix tells you the powertrain: DM-i means a plug-in hybrid focused on low consumption, DM-p a plug-in hybrid focused on performance, usually 4x4, and EV or no suffix means pure electric.
The full BYD lineup and positioning
Besides the models in our stock, BYD sells more than 20 models in China. Any of them can be brought in to order. Some have a different name in Europe: for example, the Yuan PLUS is sold in the EU as the Atto 3.
The Price level column shows, on a scale of 1 to 4, how expensive the model is within the BYD range: from budget to premium. The European rival column gives a reference for size and class, so you know what to compare it with. It doesn't mean the cars are identical.
How many BYD models have sold
BYD reports monthly sales by model family, not by individual version. For example, “Song” includes the Song PLUS, Song Pro and Song L. That's why the charts below show families, plus the officially announced sales milestones for individual models.

How many cars BYD sold from each family, per year
Song remains BYD's best-selling family. The biggest growth belongs to the Seal series, fourfold in two years, thanks to the new Seal 05 and Seal 06. Han and Dolphin have declined as buyers move to newer models.
