What to know before buying a Geely
- The same car has several names. The Galaxy Starship 7 is sold in other countries as the Starray EM-i or EX5 EM-i, the Galaxy E5 as the EX5, and the Xingyue L as the Monjaro. When looking for parts or reviews, start from the VIN and the exact name of the version.
- The Galaxy L7 is out of production. In 2026, Geely replaced it with the Galaxy M7, a reworked version. The car remains technically current, but a discontinued model can lose resale value faster.
- Chinese-market versions are not the ones sold by the official importer. Moldova has an official Geely distributor that sells export versions. Cars brought from China have software and infotainment designed for China and may have different equipment. Do not assume the official importer's warranty or service covers them automatically.
- Very new technology. The EM-i hybrid has existed since December 2024, the Galaxy E5 since 2024, and the Monjaro HEV since April 2026. There is no long-term reliability data yet, and the ranges in Chinese spec sheets are on the CLTC cycle, which is optimistic compared with real conditions.

A short history
Li Shufu founded Geely in 1986 in the city of Taizhou, Zhejiang province, as a refrigerator parts factory. In 1994 it moved into motorcycles, and in 1997 it entered the car industry. The first car, the Geely Haoqing, rolled off the assembly line in Linhai on August 8, 1998. Series production only started in 2002, after government approval.
In 2004, the car division, Geely Automobile Holdings, listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange. In 2010, the Geely group bought Volvo Cars from Ford for 1.8 billion dollars, the largest foreign acquisition by a Chinese carmaker up to that point. The two companies then jointly developed the CMA platform, which also underpins the Monjaro (Xingyue L).
A series of new brands and acquisitions followed. Lynk & Co appeared in 2016, and in 2017 the group bought 49.9% of Malaysia's Proton and 51% of Lotus. In 2020, Geely launched SEA, a platform for electric cars, and formed a 50/50 joint venture with Mercedes-Benz for smart. In 2021 came Zeekr, the premium electric brand.
In February 2023, Geely launched the Galaxy (Yinhe) series, dedicated to electric and plug-in hybrid cars. The first model was the Galaxy L7 SUV. In October 2024, the former Geometry brand was absorbed into Galaxy, and in March 2025 Galaxy became a stand-alone brand. Also in October 2024 came the Xingyuan, a small electric car that became China's best-selling model in 2025.
In 2025, Geely Auto sold 3.02 million cars, 39% more than in 2024. Galaxy alone passed 1.24 million. On December 22, 2025, Geely Auto took full ownership of Zeekr and delisted it from the New York Stock Exchange. Zeekr already owned 51% of Lynk & Co, so all of the group's volume car brands are now in a single company. In 2025 and 2026, Geely also entered the major Western European markets.
What sets it apart
NordThor EM-i, the hybrid that drives mostly on electricity
EM-i (Leishen, meaning Thor, in China) is Geely's plug-in hybrid system, launched at the end of 2024 on the Galaxy Starship 7. It has a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 46.5% thermal efficiency and two electric motors in a single-speed transmission. In the city the car drives almost entirely on electricity, and the gasoline engine works mainly as a generator. The principle is similar to BYD's DM-i. Since 2025, EM-i has also replaced the old NordThor 8848 system (1.5 turbo with a three-speed hybrid gearbox) on the Galaxy L7.
The SEA and GEA platforms
SEA, unveiled in 2020, is the group's electric platform, used by Zeekr, smart and Lynk & Co. GEA, launched in April 2024, is the version for volume cars and supports electric, plug-in hybrid and range-extended powertrains. The first model on GEA was the Galaxy E5, sold for export as the EX5. Galaxy batteries are LFP (lithium iron phosphate), branded Aegis by Geely.
The Volvo legacy
The Monjaro (Xingyue L in China) is built on the CMA platform, developed by Geely and Volvo, the same base as the Volvo XC40. The gasoline versions have a 2.0 turbo engine derived from the Volvo Drive-E family. Since April 2026, China also has the Monjaro i-HEV, a conventional hybrid with no plug, with a 1.5 turbo engine and two electric motors.
Geely uses Chinese names in its home market and other names for export, which causes confusion. Yinhe (银河) means Galaxy, Xingjian (星舰) means Starship, Xingyuan (星愿) is “star wish”, and the Xingyue L (星越L) is sold for export as the Monjaro. The same car can have two or three names: the Galaxy Starship 7 is sold in some countries as the Starray EM-i or EX5 EM-i, the Galaxy E5 as the EX5 or E5, and the Xingyuan as the EX2. On Galaxy models, the letters seem to indicate the series, although Geely has not officially explained the rule: E for electric (E5, E8), L for the first plug-in hybrids (L6, L7), M for the new SUVs (M7, M9) and A for sedans (A7).
The full Geely lineup and positioning
Geely is a mainstream brand, from budget cars (Xingyuan, Emgrand) to large SUVs and MPVs costing over 300,000 yuan (Galaxy M9, V900), and it competes directly with BYD, Chery and Changan; above it, in the same group, sit Lynk & Co, Zeekr, Volvo, Polestar and Lotus.
The Price level column shows, on a scale of 1 to 4, how expensive the model is: from budget to premium. The European rival column is a reference for size and class; it doesn't mean the cars are the same. The yellow tag marks models in our catalog.
