What to know before buying a Leapmotor
- Very small profit on each car. In 2025, Leapmotor earned on average about 900 yuan (under 120 euros) per car. In the first quarter of 2026 it fell back into loss, and its 2026 profit target was cut by about 40%. The company has large cash reserves, but it depends on very high volumes.
- No official importer in Moldova, and the C16 is not in the European lineup. Leapmotor sells officially in Europe through Stellantis (the nearest importer is in Romania), but it has no representation in Moldova, and the C16 is not part of the European lineup. A C16 brought from China has no warranty from the European Leapmotor International network, and specific parts are sourced through our network.
- Software designed for China. Infotainment and driver assistance are developed for the Chinese market. On a car brought directly from China, some features (maps, apps, voice assistant, advanced assisted driving) may be limited or available only in Chinese. Check with us what works on the version you choose.
- Models refreshed very often. Leapmotor updates its models almost every year (the C10, C11 and C16 got new versions in June 2026), and new-car prices in China often drop. This weighs on resale value. The range in Chinese spec sheets is on the CLTC cycle; in reality, especially in winter, expect 20–30% less.

A short history
Leapmotor was founded in December 2015 in Hangzhou by Zhu Jiangming and Fu Liquan, co-founders of Dahua Technology, one of the world's largest makers of surveillance cameras. That is where the focus on in-house electronics and software comes from. The first model, the small S01 electric coupe, reached customers in 2019, in about 1,000 units.
The first success was the T03, a small electric city car launched in 2020: it accounted for more than 90% of the 11,391 cars delivered that year. The C11 SUV followed (sales from September 2021), then the C01 sedan (2022). In 2022, Leapmotor listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange and delivered 111,168 cars, but it was still losing money. CEO Zhu Jiangming said at the time that the company needed at least 400,000 cars a year to turn a profit.
In October 2023, Stellantis (Peugeot, Fiat, Opel, Jeep, Citroën) invested 1.5 billion euros for about 21% of Leapmotor. The two created Leapmotor International, owned 51% by Stellantis and 49% by Leapmotor, with the exclusive right to sell and build Leapmotor cars outside China. Sales in Europe began in fall 2024, with the T03 and the C10 SUV. Also in 2023, Leapmotor launched the LEAP 3.0 architecture, on which its new models are based.
Growth was very fast: 144,155 cars in 2023, 293,724 in 2024 and 596,555 in 2025, the highest volume among China's new electric carmakers. The first profitable quarter came at the end of 2024, and 2025 was the first full year in profit: 540 million yuan, on revenue of 64.7 billion. In December 2025, the state-owned FAW group (Hongqi) signed to buy about 5% of the company for 3.74 billion yuan, and in January 2026 a state fund from Jinhua joined with 3 billion. The share issue was approved by the Chinese securities regulator on September 16, 2026; once completed, Stellantis's stake will fall from about 20% to about 18%.
For 2026, Leapmotor set a target of one million cars. In the first eight months it delivered 560,883 (+71%), with more than 100,000 a month in July and August. Exports grew almost fivefold in the first half. Profit remains small, however: the first quarter ended in a loss, and in August the company cut its 2026 profit target by about 40%, to around 3 billion yuan.
What sets it apart
Almost everything made in-house
Unlike many manufacturers that buy ready-made systems, Leapmotor develops its own central computer, software, electric motors, power electronics and battery pack. According to the company, parts developed and made in-house account for about 65% of the cost of a car. This allows low prices, but it also means that specific parts are only available through the brand's network.
LEAP 3.0 and "Four-Leaf Clover"
Launched in July 2023, the LEAP 3.0 architecture combines into a single central computer four systems that usually have separate computers: infotainment, driver assistance, powertrain and body electronics. The result: fewer cables, easier software updates and lower costs. The C10, C16 and the B series are built on this base.
Battery integrated into the chassis (CTC)
Leapmotor uses cell-to-chassis (CTC) technology: the battery cells are mounted directly into the car's structure, with no separate modules and no top cover. The car's floor becomes the battery cover. This reduces weight, increases body rigidity and frees up cabin space.
EREV: gasoline only makes electricity
The EREV versions (增程 in Chinese, "extended range") have a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that never drives the wheels; it only charges the battery. The wheels are always driven by the electric motor. On the C16 EREV, the battery is 28.4 kWh, and the claimed electric-only range is about 200 km on the Chinese CLTC cycle. The newest generation, on the D19 SUV, has an 80.3 kWh battery even in the EREV version.
The Chinese name 零跑 (pronounced roughly "Ling-pao") means "running from zero". Models are grouped into series by size and price: the A series (the smallest and cheapest, A05, A10), the B series (compacts, B01, B05, B10), the C series (family cars, C01, C10, C11, C16) and the D series (top of the range, D19, D99). Some models have a different name for export: the Lafa 5 is sold outside China as the B05, the A10 as the B03X, and the A05 as the B03. The T03 is the small city car from the old generation.
The full Leapmotor lineup and positioning
Leapmotor is a mass-market brand, with low prices for what it offers: in China it competes with BYD, Geely Galaxy, Xpeng and the Tesla Model Y, while in Europe it serves as the Stellantis group's affordable electric brand, up against BYD, MG and Dacia.
The Price level column shows, on a scale of 1 to 4, how expensive the model is: from budget to premium. The European rival column is a reference for size and class; it doesn't mean the cars are the same. The yellow tag marks models in our catalog.
